Last year, Harrogate joined thousands of towns and cities across Europe to take part in its first ever Car Free Day. Widespread support from all parts of the community resulted in the town’s roads being noticeably quieter at peak times. The Council’s traffic monitoring systems revealed that were over 2,400 less cars on three of the town’s roads for that day.
This year’s event was launched at Oatlands Junior School and featured North Yorkshire County Council’s Road Safety and Travelwise modified car, which contains a laptop computer, a television – and a number of moving dummies with thought-bubbles promoting the benefits of walking rather than using the car. The car is designed to make people think about how they travel.
